Plan 16 New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

Espiritu Santo Island has Luganville as the main town and is the alternative port of entry. It is a mecca for divers, and has some of the best wreck dives in the world. There is an extensive Second World War dumping ground off Million Dollar Point, where US forces offloaded tons of surplus machinery. Palikula Bay is a beautiful scenic anchorage on the east coast.

The Maskelyne Islands at the south-east tip of Malekula Island offer protected anchorages inside the reef area. There is very good diving on the outer reef. The general belief, however, is that in Vanuatu one should only swim when the water is clear and take local advice whenever possible to assess the risk of shark attack. Port Sandwich, close by, is considered a safe ‘cyclone hole’, but not safe for swimming.

The beat to windward from Efate down to Tanna is said to be worth the pain. Mount Yasur, an active volcano, provides spectacular entertainment – local guides are available to take you up it. The anchorage at Port Resolution can be rolly. One day there may be arrangements for outward clearance at Tanna, but in the meantime it would be unwise to risk going there, or anywhere else in the group, without having first cleared correctly. There have been instances of yachts being heavily fined for doing so.
